Consider the following diagram created hastily from the photo attached:

An Event is a organized race, such as the  Polar Dash. Volunteers are scheduled to perform various activities, such as handing Gatorade (or hot cocoa as the case may be) to runners. Volunteers earn points ("bones") for completing their scheduled activities.
